Sandy Milgraum, MD – Oreganknow

When Staci Ryan’s son, Billy returned home from skateboarding with a bruised ego and skinned knee, Mom knew exactly what to do. She reached into the medicine cabinet for a new, patented, natural, safe, wound-healing ointment; OreganKnow.

OreganKnow contains a water soluble extract of the oregano plant. Hippocrates, a physician in ancient Greece, used oregano on the skin as an antiseptic to prevent infections. Unfortunately, over the years this treatment fell out of favor as oregano’s essential oil frequently causes allergic contact dermatitis thus precluding its use, until now. In preparing the water soluble oregano extract in OreganKnow healing ointment, oregano’s essential oil is removed, however scientific studies reveal the remaining extract retains oregano’s powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity that speeds and improves wound healing.

According to Dr. Daphna Havkin-Frenkel, an expert in natural products who discovered the patented process to remove the oregano essential oil from the leaves while retaining the potent Oregano Natural Preservative, “this same extract is used as a natural preservative in foods.”

A double blind, placebo controlled study at Rutgers Medical School Department of Dermatology demonstrated the value of using OreganKnow as a healing ointment, after skin surgery. The results showed statistically significant improvement in scar color, pigmentation, and pliability over placebo with far less chance of skin infections compared with petrolatum. Sandy Milgraum, MD a Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School stated that, “presumably the Oregano water soluble extract reduces the bacteria biofilm, a major barrier to wound healing.” He added, “my patients especially like OreganKnow healing ointment after surgical procedures because it is soothing, it is a natural product produced from renewable, stainable resources and it works.”

Also, according to Milgraum, “allergic contact dermatitis is a major problem with other leading brands of healing ointments. It actually occurs in 5-10% of patients using popular healing ointments.”

He continued, “allergic contact dermatitis occurs because these other brands contain allergens such as lanolin, bacitracin, neomyocin, polyethylene glycol and chemical preservatives. This allergic contact dermatitis often becomes more of a problem then the original minor wound, cut, scrape or burn.”
